About a month ago, I figured a bigger display was the way to go. I had been using my 12″ PowerBook as a main computer for nearly two years, and when I got my external keyboard hooked up, thus moving the screen further back, it just got too tiny. Even for my eyes.

So I started looking for options. Cheap 17-inchers, cheap 19-inchers… expensive Apple 20″ widescreens. Then there was the Dell 20″ widescreen. It was not as pretty as Apples offering, but not bad. And based on “buzz”, had the same display as the one from Apple. Close enough for me. It has the same 2-port USB2-hub as Apples. It lacks the 2-port FW-hub from Apples monitor. BUT, it more than makes up for it (for some people at least) by adding composite and s-video in. It has the ability to run PiP (Picture-in-Picture). It also supports the ancient VGA-input.

I like it, I like it a lot. Its BIG. The image is bright, really bright. And sharp. No ghosting. And maybe I was simply lucky – but zero dead pixels.

Currently I run the setup with dual displays (not mirrored). The PowerBook runs a resolution of 1024×768, whilst the Dell runs at 1680×1050. Check out the setup on my Flickr-page.

When I bought it, it was 25% off. But even at full price, its $100 or so below Apples in terms of price. This might or might not be the case when you read this 🙂

Recommended buy? No doubt about it!

You have no idea how jealous I am! I might have to get an external monitor myself at some point..
